1 King William Street is a Grade II listed building therefore careful restoration and redevelopment were an essential part of the project.

24-33 St Swithin’s Lane was also incorporated into the redevelopment and was also clad in Portland Stone to carry the continuity of the building.

Internally the two buildings were linked to create a large office space. A new entrance was also created in St Swithin’s Lane incorporating Portland stone in the design.

The Architect designed the cladding to incorporate the mouldings and large design features of 1 King William Street with the more modest characteristics of St Swithin’s Lane and the surrounding buildings.

The Architects came to Portland for a Quarry visit where Albion’s Range Panels were examined. After discussions on the durability and technical results of the various stones available Bowers Whitbed was chosen for the columns and Bowers Basebed was selected to match the existing stone cladding.

Some of the finished stones were produced at Albion’s Stone’s Factory on Portland whilst others were produced by Stone Developments from slabs cut by Albion Stone.
