Private Residence, Chelsea

This project was awarded Award in the Interiors category at the Natural Stone Awards 2000.

The official guide said, 'The site was previously occupied by a police station, which was demolished to make way for the construction of a large new property occupied by a private client.

CWO supplied, designed and fixed the external, as well as the internal stone, to this new build contract. The internal works comprised the construction of a new elliptical stone staircase in Basebed Portland stone, designed and worked by CWO.

Stone floors to the ground floor were laid in a diamond pattern with surrounding ornamental border. Steps lead to a messanine area. The internal stonework also comprised the restoration and installation of antique fireplaces, purchased privately by the client and installed by CWO.'

The judges commented, 'The judges spent far longer than they planned trying to find faults in this scheme but without success! It was evident the architect was fully in control of the detailing and, one suspects, it was his determination that ensured the excellent standard of craftsmanship.'
