Chris Dove and Craig Mitchell, two architectural students from Liverpool, won the Stone Bench Student Design Competition which is organised annually by the City of London Corporation.

The idea of the competition is to introduce stone to architecture students, asking them to come up with stone seating for the Square Mile.

Dove and Mitchell’s winning design was carved out of Grove Whitbed and was unveiled in October 2012. Albion Stone supplied Grove Whitbed for the project, with the student’s design being made and installed by masons Sam Elgar and Ed Shaw, who recently completed their three-year apprenticeship training at stonemasonry company CWO.

The bench was unveiled by the Sheriff of the City of London in Cheapside, near to St Paul’s Cathedral
