Albion Stone one of the leading Portland Stone supplier are pleased to announce we have reached the final stage of the first part of the new Stonehills mine site.
The site is gradually taking shape and Albion Stone aim to have the site up and running as a fully operational mine by next year. Woodmace Ltd are currently working on the finishing touches of the excavation site; the work has included punching an access hole into the centre of a greenfield site whilst recording, evaluating and preserving valuable local archaeological sites and carefully removing the top soil under instructions of our on-site archaeologist. It also involved the peeling back of layers of clays, rubble and stone beds to reveal the massive capstone which will form the roof of the mine across the vast site. The topsoil was then placed back over the rubble and clay deposit ready for the return of the farming operation.
The second stage will involve the cutting and removal of the capstone and then the careful extraction of the Whitbed Portland stone to allow the construction of the mine portals.
