Albion Stone have been working with the HMS Illustrious Association for the past year to create the now completed new Memorial stone which marked the 62nd anniversary of the tragedy which occurred on Sunday
17th October 1948. The stone has been placed to overlook Portland Harbour where the tragedy happened.
Albion Stone were guests at the Dedication Service conducted by The Chaplain of the Fleet, the Venerable John Green CB QHC, and the unveiling was carried out by Admiral Stanhope in front of over 120 members of HMS Illustrious Association, including survivors of the tragedy and relatives of those who died.
Steve Woodward Stonemason was honoured to have worked on such a special memorial. Steve said "this is the first time I have worked on such a large piece with lettering, I am very pleased with the overall result and felt very lucky to have been asked to the unveiling of the stone".
John Ellis from the HMS Illustrious Association has said "We would never have any hesitation in recommending Albion Stone" and he thanked Albion "for the beautiful memorial constructed for us it looks so perfect on its site at the Marina, we have received so many excellent complimentary comments, both on the day and since".
