Restoration and Biodiversity

Our extraction sites, the former quarries and the active mines are located within Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and alongside the Jurassic World Heritage coast.  These designations are geological and biological, and the quarrying activities have been instrumental in providing these unique habitats and exposures.

It is vital that we work to the highest environmental stewardship, so we ensure that our management schemes are compliant to ISO 14001. Certificate available on request.

Albion Stone have also helped fund important works on the island of Portland, including match funding to release £80,000 of funding from Viridor for the Portland Living Landscape project.

John Stobart, Planning and Senior Conservation Advisor at Natural England says, 'I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those at Albion Stone Limited for their help and support in our efforts to manage the SSSIs on Portland. Albion Stone's commitment to the conservation of its sites, its positive approach to public access and its ongoing support for the Portland Quarries Nature Park is helping to deliver a wonderful environmental legacy for the people of Portland.'

Our objectives include:

a. To maximise the land under our control that is either unaffected by mineral extraction or has been restored.

b. To agree an active environmental management plan for all land under our control with either the Mineral Planning Department, and /or Natural England and/or Dorset Wildlife Trust.
