Defining Portland Stone Finishes

12/05/2026 • News

Choosing the right finish for Portland Stone is just as important as selecting the stone itself. The finish defines the look, feel and performance of the material, and yet the industry has long suffered from confusing terminology. It is not uncommon for the same finish to be described by different names, or for the same name to be used for noticeably different results.

At Albion Stone, we believe clarity is essential. That is why we clearly define the finishes we offer, ensuring architects, designers and clients know exactly what they are specifying.

Albion Stone currently produces the following key finishes. All sample photos below are completed our Stonehills Whitbed.

Fine Rubbed

A Fine Rubbed finish delivers a smooth, flat surface with a subtle matt appearance. It is refined without being polished, allowing the natural character of Portland Stone to remain visible. This finish is often selected for contemporary interiors or elevations where a clean and understated appearance is required.

Brushed

Brushed Portland Stone has a softly textured surface created by brushing the stone to remove softer material. The result is a gently weathered look that retains definition while offering improved slip resistance. It is well suited to both internal and external applications where a more tactile stone surface is desired.

Pillowed

The Pillowed finish produces softened edges and a gently undulating surface, giving the stone a traditional and time worn character. It is particularly effective where an aged or heritage appearance is required, while still benefiting from the consistency and quality of newly produced Portland Stone.

Rota Bush/Bush Hammer

Rota Bush, also commonly referred to as Bush Hammer, is a mechanically textured finish that creates a pronounced and characterful surface. The process produces a strong visual texture while also improving grip, making it particularly suitable for external applications.

Tumbled Edge

Tumbled Edge stone is processed to soften and round the edges, mimicking the effects of natural wear over time. This finish is often selected where a relaxed, traditional aesthetic is required.

While these finishes cover many architectural requirements, we understand that every project is different. If you require a finish that falls outside the options listed above, Albion Stone is more than happy to help. We simply ask that a photograph of a similar finish is provided, allowing our team to fully understand your requirements and work with you to achieve the desired result.

By adopting clear terminology and offering expert guidance, Albion Stone continues to support designers and builders in specifying Portland Stone with confidence, precision and consistency.
