Albion Stone is pleased to announce the publication of Mine Report No. 119, offering an updated and detailed insight into the block sizes, geological characteristics and long‑term availability of our renowned Portland Stone beds. This latest report has been produced to support architects, designers and contractors in making informed decisions when specifying Portland Stone for both contemporary and heritage projects.

Mine Report No. 119 provides precise data on the maximum and average block sizes extracted from each stone bed within our mines. This information enables our customers to gain a deeper understanding of the material’s natural variation, allowing for more accurate project planning and improved design flexibility. The report also presents a clear overview of current stock levels and projected future availability across all our Portland Stone beds, ensuring confidence that we have the reserves to supply a wide range of projects directly from stock.

Albion Stone operates the largest and most productive Portland Stone mines on the Isle of Portland, extracting a full range of beds including Bowers Basebed, Jordans Basebed, Stonehills Whitbed, Jordans Whitbed, Fancy Beach Whitbed, Grove Whitbed, Bowers Roach, Ostrea Patch Reef and Heritage Portland Stone. While all Portland Stone maintains a consistent creamy‑white matrix, subtle variations in shell content and texture influence how light interacts with the surface, giving each bed its own distinctive aesthetic and performance characteristics. Portland Stone has been used for centuries in prestigious buildings throughout the UK and internationally, testament to its durability and heritage value.

As a fourth‑generation family business, Albion Stone continues to lead the industry in sustainable and responsible stone extraction. We pioneered the move from open quarrying to underground mining more than two decades ago, significantly reducing environmental impact while maintaining exceptional product quality. Our operations are supported by ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 45001 safety standards, reaffirming our commitment to the highest levels of operational excellence.
