Portland Stone:
Jordans Basebed & Grove Whitbed
Scope of Project:
Ten Stone Sculptures & three Plinths
Hove in East Sussex has a thriving art scene; as part of the MODA Hove Central, 564 home development, local artists were invited to collaborate and utilise the £450,000 MODA Public Art Strategy fund. Spanning a couple of years, the project included public engagement events at Hove Museum of Creativity.
Dotted throughout the main boulevard of the development, you will find ten stone sculptures carved from Portland's Jordans Basebed and three Grove Whitbed large plinths used to elevate some of the carvings, creating contrast. The trails design celebrates the surrounding countryside from the South Downs to the English Chanel.
It took each sculptor between 3-4 months to create their sculptures, which represent species or plants native to the region, highlighting the unique landscape. Sadly one sculpture of a Plaice fish was lost onsite whilst in storage.
Stone sculptors Edgar & George have been working together for nearly a decade; their work is inspired by historical ornamental carving traditions and how nature meets architecture. These public artworks celebrate craftsmanship and the local natural narratives.
They have been working with Portland stone since starting their City & Guilds at Art School, and continue to use it because of it’s quality, durable nature, historic connections and suitability for detailed carving, Edgar has also previously visited our mine.
