Scope of Project:
Step-free access to St Paul’s Cathedral.
This project was commended in the Landscape category in the 2022 Natural Stone Awards
In order to improve the access for all to St Paul’s Cathedral, sculpted ramps were installed on both sides and laid on top of the original steps in order to blend in with and respect the historic nature of this landmark building. In the past temporary ramps and a lift were used for this purpose.
Approximately 54 m3 of Portland Stone was used for both side access ramps.
Jordan’s Whitbed Limestone was selected because it matches the original Portland stone on the façade of St Paul’s Cathedral and has shown itself to be durable in the London environment. For this project it was important to select a bed that is most suitable for use at pavement level and has the characteristics that allow a tooled finish and desired appearance to be achieved.
